Types Of Dams

Dams are one of the greatest inventions of mankind. It won't be wrong to say that many of the countries' economies and sustainability depends on the dams in those countries. Dams are very important as they not only are a source of water but also save people from flooding and the most important thing is that they provide us with a very cheap source of producing electricity.
Dams may be natural but in this modern world most of the dams are massive and engineered to perfection to be able to stop the huge force of a river at certain point. The closing down of a river may effect the natural habitat around the rivers but it has become a necessity as dams provide a major portion of water that is used in agriculture.
Dams are massive and are stronger like no other structures on Earth. This is because water has immense pressure that it exerts on the dams' wall, so a highly tough material must be used for the longevity of the structures. Although the history of making dams is very old yet no one was quite successful in stopping the massive force of the rivers on a large scale until the revolutionary material, concrete was discovered.
No doubt concrete changed the way how our cities look like right now. Most of the present day dams are built entirely on concrete but the way they are constructed depends on the geography and requirements of different places. So dams are classified into variety of types and following is the list of all these types of dams:
1. Storage dams
3. Detention dams
4. Overflow dams
5. Earthfill dams
6. Embankment or rockfill dams
7. Gravity dams
8. Concrete Arch
9. Buttress dam
