Silver is the second coinage metal after gold which has been famous through out the ages as a precious metals and through the centuries skillful craftsmen have carved this metal into marvelous pieces of decoration. Silver, gold and copper are the three coinage metals which have some special relation with each other.
All three of this metals are called coinage metals and they are called so because since ancient times they have been the metals of choice for making currency coins. Gold of course being the most valuable one and then comes silver. However both gold and silver are the only metals that also have a reputation as jewelry carving metals, where as copper never was a jewelry metal.
But copper has some special use in making jewelry and when it is mixed with silver or gold they form some of the best alloys, perfect for jewelry manufacturing. So if we add 7.5% copper to 92.5% of pure silver we get a resultant alloy which is called sterling silver.
Sterling silver by all means is better than pure silver. Since pure silver is very soft and not good enough for making jewelry and other decorative stuff, it is mixed with copper to form sterling silver. Sterling silver is a little harder than pure silver and is also good if you are to make gemstone studded jewelry.
Most of the silver jewelry was made for men when gold was cheap, but now gold is an all time high and even women are switching towards buying silver jewelry. This has allowed new innovations to flourish in the traditional silver jewelry and more new alloys of silver are taking birth.
But the charm of sterling silver will never subside. People love chains, bracelets, rings, earrings, cuff links, brooch etc made solely out of sterling silver. The certifying 925 stamp that comes with such jewelry shows the unique class of sterling silver.
