Sapphires

November 27th 2009 13:08

In my previous posts I discussed some of the facts related to diamonds, rubies and emeralds. I also gave an overview about white gold jewelry and sterling silver. Here in this post I will be continuing with my jewelry and precious stones related blog posts. This time it’s the precious stone sapphire.

Sapphire is considered as one of the four precious stones. Its value is a little less than the other three but like other precious stones some times it can get simply priceless. The blue sapphires are considered to be on of the most expensive sapphires and they can give tough competition to diamonds if flawless.

Sapphires come from a naturally occurring mineral called corundum. It is found in many places on earth. The blue sapphire is thought to be the most precious one but there are other colors that are beautiful as well. The mineral comes in natural colors like blue, yellow, red and star.

The red sapphire is actually a ruby because ruby is actually the same corundum mineral and the red color is imparted due to the addition of certain impurities naturally. But due to tradition we classify don't say a ruby is as a red sapphire.

Like in any other precious gemstone, the value of a sapphire is determined by the 4C's method. However the color is the most important price determining factor for sapphires. Then comes clarity and clear stones are more expensive.

There are many modern as well as ancient methods of treating sapphires, in order to improve its looks. Low quality sapphires are usually treated to enhance their beauty in studded jewelry. Synthetic sapphires are also produced to reduce the cots of sapphire studded jewelry.
