14k and 18k White Gold

May 11th 2009 07:26

Gold is one if the most precious metals that have been discovered. Although there are many other elements that are much expensive than gold of which Platinum is a well known one but the unique features that gold has is like in no other metal on earth.

Gold is precious because of its eye sparkling golden shine. The unique golden color is what makes gold, gold. Gold is not just unique because of its appearance but there are many physical properties because of which it is the prime metal for jewelry items.

Gold is the most ductile and malleable metal to exist. It is so malleable that even translucent sheets can be drawn out of this unique substance. Gold has been the choice for ornaments and jewelry items right from the time it was discovered. People started to use it as coins in currency and invented methods to make jewelry out of the metal.

The art of making jewelry is quite old and gold and the love of gold in a woman's heart is also that old. Not just woman, but men also find attraction in this unique metal. Gold is very soft in pure form so it is alloyed with copper, silver, nickel or palladium to give rise to 22k,21k,18k,14k etc of gold.

These typed of gold alloys are actually added when proper ratios of alloy metal is added to pure gold. Pure gold is considered to be 24k in this ratio system. The alloying of gold not just makes it hard, but it also allows the goldsmith to change the color of the gold item.

That is how White gold is formed. If we add nickel or palladium in the ratio of 18/24 for 18k gold and 14/24 for 14k gold, the alloy metals give their whitish color to the pure yellow color of gold. Although the gold appears almost whitish yet we require rhodium plating after finishing since the polished ornaments will have a yellowish shade.

The adding of impurity actually decreases the amount of gold in a certain weight of some karate of gold. This is why 14k or 18k gold is cheaper that other gold. This was some introduction to white gold the link below will take you to the details about gold and white gold.
